American singer, Joseph London has quickly established himself on the stages of both the Opera and Broadway repertoires and has been hailed by critics as having a voice that is "Velvety," "Lush," "Rich," and "Dramatic." Beginning April 2010, Joseph will step into the iconic role of Old Deuteronomy in the Broadway National Touring Company of the Andrew Lloyd Webber megamusical CATS. Prior to joining the CATS National Tour, Joseph took to the stage as the Beadle Bamford in Stephen Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD and as Monsieur D'Arque in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in 2009.  In 2008, Joseph was seen in the Broadway National Tour of CHICAGO the Musical produced by Troika Entertainment "shocking" audiences with his "convincing portrayal" of Mary Sunshine: "the reporter with a heart and a secret!" Joseph portrayed Mary Sunshine in more than 300 performances in over 40 states. The show was choreographed by Gary Chryst, directed by Scott Faris, and conducted by David Andrews Rogers. Prior to touring, Joseph had the great opportunity to return to his favorite operatic role as Oberon in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream at the world-famous Juilliard Opera Center in New York City. During this time Mr. London was the Chicago District winner and Regional Finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2005 Joseph received his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Opera from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of legendary voice teacher Marlena Malas. While at the Manhattan School of Music Mr. London felt fortunate to perform in several operas by Handel, portraying the roles of Didymus in Theodora, Lichas in Hercules, and Penseroso in L'Allegro ed il Penseroso. While at the Manhattan School of Music he was also heard singing the roles of Nerone in L'incoronazione di Poppea and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 2003 Mr. London appeared in Chicago Opera Theater's production of Handel's Agrippina under the baton of Emmanuelle Haim and direction of Lillian Groag. In 2002 Mr. London received a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts where he studied with Metropolitan Opera Soprano Judith Haddon and world renowned countertenor Mark Crayton. While at Roosevelt University, Joseph was selected by the late Maestro Lorenzo Malfatti to study Opera at the Opera Theater of Lucca, Italy. While living in Italy Joseph studied voice with Metropolitan Opera Mezzo-Soprano Claudia Catania, and acting with Phantom of the Opera and The Godfather III star Franc D'Ambrosio In 2002 and 2004, Joseph appeared at the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York as Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, and La Mort in Stravinsky's Le Rossignol under the baton of Maestro Timothy Muffit and direction of Jay Jackson. When not on the operatic stage Mr. London is an active recitalist. He has performed several recitals in Chicago, New York, and Italy. His recitals and concerts have included Vivaldi's Stabat Mater, Bach's Mass in F, Carmina Burana, and many solo recitals. Solo recitals in Chicago at Rudolph Ganz Memorial Hall with Craig Rutenberg and Dana Brown, The Chicago Cultural Center with Craig Rutenberg and Jane Glover. In 2002 Mr. London was seen in a live telecast singing Handel Arias in the "Handel Opera Symposium" underwritten by the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Chicago Opera Theater. Recitals in New York with Phillip Kirchmann, Jonathan Kelly, Craig Rutenberg, and Mikael Eliasen. Mr. London recently gave a recital at Trinity Church Wall Street in their Thursdays at One concert series broadcast live on the net.
